The Festival of Animated Objects marries the timeless practice of mask and puppet arts with contemporary spaces, themes and ideas. The festival not only provides a stage for Alberta creators to showcase their work but is also a forum for an international exchange of ideas providing learning opportunities for professional and emerging artists and the public at large to find expression through animated objects.

Women’s History Walk at Fort Calgary.

Celebrate International Women’s Day with a one-hour outdoor walking tour around the lands of Fort Calgary! Discover some of the hidden histories of women who made an impact on the lands we now call Calgary—from First Nations and Métis women to new settlers on the prairies—and delve into why women are often overlooked in stories about our history. Dress for the weather and be prepared to walk over snowy and/or uneven ground as the city starts to defrost from winter! Ages 12+.

Indigenous Sports.

On Sunday, March 24, join us at Fort Calgary to learn about the history of Indigenous sports across the land we now know as Canada. You’ll also get to try your hand at playing some of these sports, including the national summer sport of Canada: lacrosse!

Fireside Storytelling.

The confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers has been a place of gathering since time immemorial. Gather around the fire at the confluence for an afternoon of fascinating stories told by Indigenous storytellers from Treaty 7. Enjoy a cup of cider or hot chocolate and immerse yourself in tales expertly crafted by our speaker. On March 31, join storyteller Julius Hirsch for an hour of tales from Blackfoot culture. Julius Hirsch is a status member of the Northern Piikani Nation in Brocket, Alberta who grew up around the Blackfoot Ceremony learning oral stories from the elders on both sides of his family. Julius is passionate about leading tours and educating others about Blackfoot history and the early contact with the North West Mounted Police. Julius is currently a third-year student at the University of Calgary majoring in History, and his previous work experience includes several years in the military as a reservist and Fort Whoop-Up in Lethbridge’s Indian Battle Park.
