Even though my kids are teenagers now, I still remember those first days of school as I tearfully watched them get on the bus and head off to Kindergarten. Sigh, it goes by so fast… If your little ones are just starting school, they (and you!) might be a little nervous about this new experience.
Your children are out of school enjoying the summer and before you know it, they will be boarding the school bus once again, or for many children, for the very first time as they enter Kindergarten. For young elementary students who have never been on a school bus, waiting for the bus on their first day of school can be an overwhelming experience. You’ve heard the term ‘It takes a village,’ and it truly takes a complex team to ensure the safe transportation of students to and from school. This team includes representatives from the schools, the school boards, the bus companies and, of course, the responsible parents or the caregivers and the students themselves.
It’s one of the secrets of parenthood: Not just children get separation anxiety! Many parents are unprepared for the feelings of sadness and emptiness they have when separated from their children. The emotions that pop up when you leave your child with a babysitter or when you watch your child drive away on the school bus can span from a dull ache all the way to worry and panic.
