Parents Only! The Rest, Regroup & Getaway Guide - 2019

Parents - especially those with very young kids - often express that they feel a little lost in their new roles of ‘mom’ or ‘dad.’ It’s totally normal to feel swallowed up by everything your kids need in those first few years! However, it’s essential for parents to remain connected to the things that make them unique, complete individuals outside of their parenting responsibilities. We know that marriages are happier when couples take time to enjoy each other’s company, too! Push down your feelings of guilt and remember that a happy parent makes for happy kids. Go out and enjoy!

This listing is provided for your reference only. Please research carefully and choose the company that meets your family’s needs best.

KEEP YOURSELF ACTIVE

GET OUT & PLAY!

It’s hard enough to carve out time to exercise - if it feels like a punishment, it’s not likely to ever make it to the top of the priority list! If running on the treadmill during naptime isn’t your idea of a good time, there are a ton of other options to keep moving and still have fun. If you like to dance, swim, climb or even box, Calgary has a class available!

The Calgary Zoo (calgaryzoo.com) is a great place to take your kids out for a walk in the stroller, but it’s also a good spot for a couple’s night out. Every year, ZOOLIGHTS runs from the end of November all the way to January, so book a sitter and enjoy a romantic evening strolling hand in hand under the millions of twinkling lights!

Probably our favorite exercise at the moment is water aerobics! The City of Calgary Recreation (liveandplay.calgary.ca) offers drop-in classes throughout the day at all of its pools. Deep Water Workouts use flotation belts in the dive tank, while Aquacise is done in the regular pool. Both are done to music, but generally without choreography. Either way, they’re super low-impact and it’s easy to adjust the intensity whether you’re recovering from an injury or trying to get the best cardio workout possible. If you’re a member at another fitness facility and they have a pool, chances are good they also offer water aerobics - check it out!

Winter feels like a good time to hibernate, but we have a ton of walking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing trails readily accessible right here in Calgary all year round. If you’re not feeling that ambitious, most Christmas light displays are up by the end of November - find a well-decorated neighborhood and take a wander around! You don’t need to be in a gym to get a good workout.

TREAT YOURSELF

SELF CARE

Self-care means a lot of different things to different people. For some parents, self-care is an uninterrupted hour in front of the PS4; for others, it means a shower they’re allowed to take all by themselves. No matter what your definition of self-care is right now, make sure you do it! It can be hard to feel like a pedicure or a new shirt is a priority, but taking some of that energy for yourself is essential to recharging your batteries so you’re the best parent you can be.
