Earth Hour 2024.

Calgary Unplugged is an annual family-friendly Earth Hour event. Date: Saturday, March 23, 2024 Time: 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Location: Central Library (800 3 Street SE) Join us for music, entertainment, and opportunities to experience what environmental actions you can take in Calgary. Pedal power midway games and experience how our natural world affects our daily lives. Bring personal lighting and dance to the DJ when the lights go down for the Earth Hour party! Calgary Unplugged is hosted by The Arusha Centre's Climate Program, with support from The City of Calgary and community agencies. If you can't make it to the event, turning off nonessential lights, "unplug" from electronics at 8:30 and reconnect with people, games or hobbies! After Earth Hour, share your participation with #EarthHour and #EarthHourYYC. Email programs@arusha.org with questions.

These free events are a great reason to enjoy a stay-cation during the Calgary Stampede 2018! New at Fluor Rope Square (7th Avenue and Macleod Trail SE) is two family movie nights on July 7 and July 14! This is an excellent chance for the family to spend an evening out. Events at Fluor Rope Square kick off on July 7, with the famous Chuckwagon Stampede breakfast and the Lammle’s World Champion Hat Stomp Competition. These events will continue July 9 to 14 and will also feature the Fluor Great Western Flapjack Flip Contest! Families can pick up free tickets to join the Parade of Old Time Rigs and enjoy their pancake breakfast in a horse-drawn carriage. Families can also kick the dust up with Fluor Square Dancers along Stephen Avenue Walk on July 7 and July 9 to 14, no experience necessary! Learn how to square dance like a pro. Members of the five tribes of Treaty 7 will also be performing in a First Nations Parade July 7 and July 9 to 14. Donning their traditional regalia, parade performers will start at 9th Avenue at 1 Street SW and travel to Fluor Rope Square and finish at 4th Avenue SW. This weather-permitting event teaches attendees of all ages about First Nation heritage and culture through song, dance, and commentaries. For further details and schedule, visit the website.

The celebrations will include: Full-Size Tipi: Step inside a tipi adorned with tapestries representing decades of Indigenous contributions to Calgary’s culture. ReWilding Walking Tour.

Flooding events and the negative impact of park visitors walking off designated pathways both have serious implications for the health of the Fish Creek watershed. This tour takes you to visit the Friends’ riparian restoration sites to see the important work being done by volunteers that combats these issues and contributes to increased ecosystem health. Drew McKibben has been in the communications business for nearly 25 years as a journalist, a broadcaster and author of periodical nature stories for children. Before his communications career, Drew spent a decade in the backcountry as a fire lookout and lighthouse keeper, and as a foreman with federal and provincial parks building backcountry projects. He has also worked as an interpreter of cultural history at Calgary’s Heritage Park and is currently a river guide on the Bow River for Calgary’s River Watch program. Drew has been an avid volunteer with the Friends of Fish Creek since 2014.

We set up a reading tent at Riley Park every Saturday of the summer (weather permitting) to promote children's literacy June 23 to August 25! Children will be able to read books with volunteers and participate in crafts and face paint related to the weekly themes.
