The YMCA is excited to offer Calgary Flames Grade 6 activities live and in person in a safe and fun outdoor environment and a virtual at-home experience! This free membership supported by the Calgary Flames Foundation is still available and will be extended to expire December 31, 2021 for any children that began their membership after August 1, 2020. Grade 6 Memberships for 2021/2022 school year will be available as of August 1, 2021. Programming will return to in-person in the coming weeks and months with some virtual resources also being offered. For more information, visit the website.

Based on the success of the past “Dinosaurs Alive” exhibit, the Calgary Zoo is introducing 26 new realistic animatronic dinosaurs (across 17 species) within Prehistoric Park, from the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods, covering the zoo’s regions including Canada, Asia, Africa, South America, and Antarctica. The exhibit, designed to educate, as well as entertain, encourages visitors to go on an immersive journey through the newly designed Prehistoric Park to experience what it may have been like to roam the Earth with the dinosaurs, while inspiring action to prevent the loss of endangered species today. “Dinosaurs: Awakened” will be viewable within Prehistoric Park until October 31, and is included in the price of daily admission. Children and youth are invited to take part in an epic, eight-week sustainability-themed challenge - “Around the World in 60 Days” - from Scouts Canada. Through fun and engaging activities rooted in sustainability, young Canadians will embark on exciting story-driven adventures set virtually in eight different countries. The activities will equip youth with tools and competencies to explore global issues; introduce topics such as inequality, food security, melting icecaps, mental and physical heath and more; and encourage creative problem-solving and reflection to drive awareness and development outcomes. Plus, with 265 hands-on Scouts for Sustainability activities accessible at scouts.ca, youth can explore their interests, take what they’ve learned a step further, and make an impact. For the month of October, Southcentre Mall is excited to celebrate Halloween by introducing opportunities for your family to capture fun (or spooky) pictures and memorable moments. The mall has installed five unique backdrops around the centre for the perfect ‘mall-o-ween’ photo op. There is also a trail of monster paws along the floor to make it easy for visitors to find the way to their next photo adventure. Plus, there is a bonus pet-friendly display located outside of PetSmart. Guests can also share their photos via social media for the opportunity to enter to win 1 of 5 $100 Southcentre Mall gift cards.

Jasper’s Dark Sky Festival is back for its 11th year, October 15 to 24! Tourism Jasper is thrilled to welcome legions of aspiring Canadian astronomers to the world’s second largest accessible dark sky preserve, as designated by the Royal Astronomical Society in Canada. The Festival features exciting interactive events, learning opportunities, and some of the best stargazing in the world!
