Calgary Unplugged is hosted by The Arusha Centre's Climate Program, with support from The City of Calgary and community agencies.
If you can't make it to the event, turning off nonessential lights, "unplug" from electronics at 8:30 and reconnect with people, games or hobbies!

Pokaiks - The Children Commemorative Walk & Gathering 2023.

Mark your calendars and get prepared to be a part of our meaningful Orange Shirt Day Event that honors our past and builds bridges for the future. Pokaiks - The Children Commemorative Walk and Gathering 2023 is a tribute to survivors of the Residential School System and Sixties Scoop, held annually on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The walk will begin at 11 a.m. on September 30th at City Hall and will follow a route along Stephen Avenue, before concluding at Shaw Millennium Park. This will be followed by traditional drumming and dancing performances, remarks from members of the Indigenous community, artisan and community booths, food and beverage offerings, and other engaging activities, that will bring further awareness to actions Calgarians can take to participate in reconciliation. The afternoon will conclude at 4 p.m.
Orange Shirt Day at Fort Calgary.

September 30th is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. Both days are intended to honour the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as to recognize the inter-generational impacts of residential schools on individuals, families, and communities.
As part of our ongoing mission of reconciliation and decolonization, Fort Calgary will be offering a variety of free programming all day, including:
-Free museum admission
-Two walking tours
-Family-friendly crafts
-An after-hours screening of the film Bones of Crows with guest speaker Michelle Thrush
We highly encourage visitors to our site on this day to come wearing an orange shirt or other orange clothing items, such as scarves, hats, buttons, etc. If you are in need of an orange shirt, we recommend purchasing from the Orange Shirt Society, a non-profit organization that aims to create awareness of the generational impacts of Residential Schools through Orange Shirt Day activities.

An opportunity to learn about the Indigenous people’s experiences of colonization at Edgemont Community Centre. Elders and knowledge keepers developed the blanket exercise to create an experiential learning tool to narrate the historic and contemporary relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in a Canadian context. The exercise includes storytelling, dialogue, as well as references to “These Mountains Are Our Sacred Places – The Story of the Stoney People” written by Chief John Snow.
