Want to encourage a lifetime of fitness, fun, and freedom? Bicycling offers all three, and today’s young riders are safer than ever. Per government statistics, kids’ fatalities from bike accidents have dropped 62 percent since 1999. But that doesn’t mean you should turn your kid loose on two wheels without proper preparation. Bike-related accidents still send over 240,000 kids to the emergency room each year - 26,000 of those have traumatic brain injuries. Here’s how to get your tots, teens, and in-betweens rolling safely.
1. Calgary Zoo to St. Patrick’s Island (5/6.7- kilometres). With a lagoon for wading, an amazing playground, a grassy hill to climb and roll down, a funky art installation (Bloom), and a pretty bridge to cross, your kids won’t want to leave! My kids call this the “bridge route” as it goes along the river and passes under several bridges and overpasses. You only have to cross the street once, at Baines Bridge, and the path is not as heavily used as other sections of the Bow River Pathway, so it is quite safe and pleasant.
You might think that non-walking babies don’t really need much in a playground - and you’re not wrong. But having been at many playgrounds while my three kids were babies, I can tell you that some playgrounds are much better than others. The playgrounds on this list are great for babies, but they are also playgrounds that older siblings and friends will love.
