It’s refreshing to find a kids’ menu that reflects the regular fare at a restaurant, rather than a predictable list of frozen burger patties and chicken fingers. Here are a few that are worth seeking out.
Three Ravens Restaurant & Wine Bar - The little-known Three Ravens in the Banff Centre has one of the best kids’ menus I’ve ever seen, with generous portions of the well-prepared dishes they’re known for, locally grown and raised from the land and sea - all with a spectacular view of the Bow Valley and an affordable wine list (which is important for parents). Three Ravens is located in the Sally Borden Building on the 4th Floor, 107 Tunnel Mountain Drive, Banff. Tres Marias Mexican Market - In a small strip mall in Marda Loop, Tres Marias has recently expanded. In addition to their daily offerings of tacos al pastor, burritos, tamales, and other offerings, they do breakfast every morning (and all day Fridays and Saturdays), and have extended their taco menu on Tuesdays. They have a kids’ menu at breakfast as well as later in the day, with kid-sized versions of the same Mexican specialties, all made with their own handmade tortillas and other local (and imported from Mexico) ingredients. Tres Marias Mexican Food Market is located at 3514, 19 Street SW. Phone: 403-243-5335; Website: tresmarias.ca; Twitter:

Chuck’s Steakhouse - Chuck’s is all about the Alberta beef experience, and kids can get their own - with mash, veggies, and steak sauce - or opt for fried chicken, baby gnocchi, or a veggies and dip platter. All are $12. Chuck’s Steakhouse is located at 101 Banff Avenue, Banff. Phone: 1-403-762-4825; Website: chuckssteakhouse.ca; Twitter: @chucksbanff
Starbelly -Kids can choose a main, a side, and a dessert for $11. There’s cheesy pasta, chicken fingers, and burgers - all made from scratch. Think of a handmade milk bun and an Angus burger, and Sunworks organic chicken fingers crisped up with panko. On Sunday evenings, they do a set family dinner for $35 per person, served family-style. Starbelly is located at #220, 19489 Seton Crescent SE. Phone: 403-570-0133; Website: starbelly.ca; Twitter: @StarbellyYYC
The Beltliner Diner - Located beside Central Memorial Park (and its sandstone library), the Beltliner has a dream $5 kids’ menu, featuring grilled cheese and fries, chocolate chip pancakes, and the cereal your parents never let you get. The Beltliner is located at 243, 12 Avenue SW. Phone: 587-955-1555; Website: thebeltliner.com; Twitter: @TheBeltliner
