Warm up your winter with a chili bar!

Feel the chill in the air? Winter is definitely upon us and it’s a long haul, so what better way to enjoy those “chili” nights than with chili (See what I did there?). This is the perfect food for large gatherings over the holiday season because it’s easy, everybody likes it, and your guests can customize it to their tastes. Here is how to create a chili buffet that is sure to warm everyone’s heart!

  1. Choose Your Chili Varieties

The first thing to do is decide on your chili base. With so many dietary restrictions, it might be best to offer two varieties. But if you know your crowd, you can reduce the work and just make one.

  • Classic Chili: Traditional beef or turkey chili.
  • Vegetarian/Vegan Chili: A hearty bean and vegetable mix.
  • White Chili: Made with chicken and white beans.
  • Chili Verde: A green chili made with tomatillos and pork.
  1. Gather Serving Dishes

What’s the big deal? Just grab some bowls. Yes, you could, or you could get creative and use holiday-themed bowls, mugs, or even bread bowls, with the bonus of no dishes!

A slow cooker is the norm for making chili, but if you don’t have one, an Instapot works or the good ol’ stovetop works great!

Use large bowls or pots for each chili variety.

Consider a slow cooker for keeping chili warm.

  1. Prepare Toppings

This is the fun part! You can create a palette of colors and textures with all the different toppings that can be added to the chili. The best part is, when you normally eat chili, there are never this many topping choices, so personalizing their chili will also amp up the flavor!

  • Cheeses: Shredded cheddar, crumbled queso fresco, or Monterey Jack.
  • Sour Cream or Greek Yogurt: For a creamy topping.
  • Chopped Onions: Raw, caramelized, or grilled.
  • Chopped Cilantro: Fresh and vibrant.
  • Sliced Jalapeños: For those who like it spicy.
  • Cornbread or Tortilla Chips: For dipping or serving on the side.
  • Hot Sauce: Offer a variety for different spice levels.
  1. Side Dishes?

While not necessary, it might be nice to add a little side dish to complete the meal and balance out the heat, especially if you go for those five-alarm chilis.

  • Salads: A fresh green salad or coleslaw.
  • Rice or Quinoa: As a base for the chili.
  • Pickles or Relishes: For added flavor.
  1. Set Up the Buffet

Using a table that has serving capacity on both sides of the table will really help with the speed of the buffet line, especially if you are hosting a large group. If it’s a smaller group, you can just use one side for serving.

Arrange the chili varieties at one end of the table with your chosen bowls and ladles for easy serving.

Place toppings in small bowls nearby, labeled for easy identification, with spoons or tongs.

  1. Decorate the Space

You’ve gone to all this work, so topping it off with some matching decor really makes your guests feel special. It could be as simple as a fall or winter-themed tablecloth or a color scheme for the tablecloth, napkins, and bowls. You could even pick up some chili pepper lights or decorations to really bring the theme home.

This easy and delicious chili buffet is the perfect reason to get together with friends and family during the colder winter months. It takes minimal time, yet the impact is huge. It’s visual, interactive, and comforting. Try it this weekend with your loved ones!
