For ‘cityslickers’ a day in the mountains can sometimes be just the therapeutic thing to counteract urban angst. Getting back to nature, enjoying fresh air and outdoor pursuits can give a wider perspective on life, promoting healthy recreation habits, especially for our offspring. Heading for Canmore, just an hour west along the Trans-Canada Highway, means 100 per cent change of pace and environment but not too much frustrating, “Are we there yet?” car time.
Yes, that's right, a winter picnic!!! Most people think of winter as a time to hibernate and wait for warmer weather. Others take up skiing or snowshoeing, and some of us just like the beauty and solitude of spending time in nature without the crowds of summer. Hence the winter picnic. The nice thing about going for a picnic in winter is that you can make it the main event, or use it as an excuse to go for a nice drive in the country.
Weather permitting, these outdoor rinks are free and open daily during the winter season.
Pigeon Lake is one of the most popular recreational lakes in Central Alberta. Situated SW of Edmonton in Alberta's parkland, the area is dotted with ranches, rolling hills, evergreens and lots of crystal clear lakes. As a matter of fact, along Hwy. #13 there are five distinct lakes great for water sports, fishing, environmental protection, scuba diving, and wilderness camping.
